Valdeorras Wine

The Valdeorras denomination of origin is located in the province of Orense in eastern Galicia, along the river Sil, and within 8 municipalities. Recently,the DO has been centred on creating native grape varieties such as Mencía and Godello. THe fact that they are develping the best white wines in the denomination of origin has given renown to the area.

The continental-Atlantic has lots of rainfall and low winter temperatures, sometimes affecting the vineyards with frost, wind and hail. The soil, however, is different in the different areas, depending on whether vineyards are are on terraces, if they contain slate (shallow soils with stones). The white grape strains used are: palomino, dona blanca and godello. Red wine varieties used as the Menía, Merenzao, Gran Negro and Grenache.
